Happy New Year fellow believers! I hope that you had a great holiday season. Super Hero Speak is coming back from their annual Christmas break, and I am too. This will be my first review of the year.

And it’s not really a review of a specific comic book, but of a charity that distributes comic book kits to children in hospitals in the United Kingdom. I am talking about LITTLE HEROES COMICS. I first came across LHC on the Awesome Comics Pod Facebook group page (yes, I do follow other podcasts besides Super Hero Speak… don’t tell Dave 😛 ).

At that time they were looking for comic book creators to submit work that could potentially appear in their first ever children comics anthology. More on that later.

I reached out to LHC sometime later, and was able to get more information on their nonprofit organization.

Little Heroes Comics was started in 2017 by Aaron Rackley. Rackley, himself having combated cancer a few years ago, wanted to be able to give to the same hospital that treated him.

“The initial idea was to send comics to children to read during treatment, ” Rackley said. “[However,] given some of the restrictions we faced with creating approved comics [the idea] grew into a kit where children could create their own comics. We are now distributing these to sick children across the UK whilst they undergo treatment.”

The kit is actually pretty cool, and there are a lot of things in it for the kids.

According to their website, www.littleheroescomics.co.uk, the kit contains the following:

• 2 x A5 Drawing Pad
• 1 x Blank Panel Comic Book
• 2 x Pencils With Rubber Tips
• 1 x Double Ended Black Marker Pen
• 1 x Sharpener
• 1 x Pencil Rubber
• 2 x Comic Related Sticker Sets
• 4 x Helpful Drawing Guides
• 1 x Pack of 8 Crayons
• 1 X Pack of 12 Half Size Coloring Pencils

In regards to their current Kickstarter campaign, Rackley had this to say:

“We are also doing a round of fundraising via a new Kickstarter campaign. A minimum donation of £3 (about $4) will give you a comic anthology full of comics kindly created by amazing creators around the unified theme of strength. For the foreseeable future we are looking to improve the kits and continue distributing them by fundraising through events and the Anthology which we hope to release twice a year.”

The anthology comic will feature works by Ross Burt, Dan Butcher, Kev Brett, Nick Prolix, and several others. All indie comic book creators that I follow on my own personal Twitter page.

“We are currently not associated with any major industry publishers and we owe all of our growth to the small press community and indie comic makers,” Rackley continued. “Without the support of these individuals, we would not have been able to get to where we are.”

“We’d like to give a special shout out to the guys over at The Awesome Comics Podcast (awesomecomics.podbean.com) who have helped us learn about the industry and who have been recommending us to their followers, the majority of whom our donations have come from.”

If you are interested in supporting LITTLE HEROES COMICS in their efforts in distributing kits to children being treated for cancer, then you are in luck! There are a couple of ways that you can do so.

“The best way people can help are through donations and sharing our site around and getting us recognized,” Rackley suggested. “We are always looking for people to help donate money for us to continue making and distributing comic making kits; pricing works out at around £6 ($8 USA) per kit.”
